WILD MAN BLUES
105 mins with Barbara Kopple Masterclass
1pm Phoenix
€12
Winner of the National Board of Review and the Broadcast Critics Association's Best Documentary Prize, Wild Man Blues follows iconoclast Woody Allen as he and his jazz band embark on a much-hyped 1996 tour of Europe. Director Barbara Kopple takes us on the stage and behind the scenes with Woody to witness him lead his band from one show to the next, navigating all sorts of circumstances, from rapturous crowds in some cities to power outages in the next. As always, Woody's anxieties are on full display. All the while, Allen's then-new girlfriend, "the infamous Soon-Yi Previn" as he calls her, travels alongside, coaxing him away from his neuroses to enjoy the finer luxuries of Europe's major cities – including a gondola ride in Venice's canals which Woody is sure will end in his murder. Both funny and poignant, Kopple's insightful film gives us a glimpse into a genuine, tender relationship that comes alive on-screen as much as any of Allen's film characters and is as delightful off-the-stage as Woody's band is in full-swing

AON ÁIT ANSEO/ANYWHERE HERE is a project which looks at how visual artists transfer methods and practices from place to place (anywhere) yet pay attention to the micro (here).
Initiated by artist Andrew Duggan, The Courthouse Studios Project in collaboration with Visual Artists Ireland facilitated the inaugural visual art gathering in Dingle/An Daingean, Kerry, Ireland, October 29th - November 2nd, 2007.
This informal and candid documentary filmed by Lanka Haouche follows the three invited artists, Sarah Browne, Ben Geoghegan and Katie Holten over the five days as they discuss, debate and test their practice.
AON ÁIT ANSEO/ANYWHERE HERE – scrúdaíonn an togra seo an slí a aistríonn an fhís-ealaíontóir modhanna oibre agus cleachtais ó áit amháin go háit eile (aon áit) ach a thugann aird leis ar na mionsonraí a bhaineann le háit ar leith (anseo).
Chuaigh an meascán den ghné idirnáisiúnta, an gné áitiúil agus na healaíontóirí a thrasnaíonn an dá thrá sin go mór i bhfeidhm orthu siúd gur suim leo forbairtí i gcleachtas ealaíona agus domhandú cultúir. (cultural globalisation)

The Other side of the mirror: Dylan in Newport 63 64 65
Phoenix 3.30pm €10
Arena brings unseen performances from Bob Dylan to viewers’ screens in Murray Lerner’s ‘The Other Side of the Mirror- Bob Dylan at Newport’. The filmis eighty minutes of Dylan’s performances at the Newport Folk Festival and seventy percent of the footage has never been seen before.
The film was shot by Lerner at the Newport Festival between 1963 and 1965 – the time when Dylan changed the music of the world along with changing himself- from the fresh faced cherub singing Blowin’ in the Wind to the rock ‘n’ roll shaman who blew pop music apart with Like a Rolling Stone.
The songs are shown in documentary format and Dylan is shown in his first milieu, the folk movement of the early to mid 60’s. The crucible of that movement was the Newport Folk Festival in Rhode Island and with his breathtakingly original songs, at the age of 22, Dylan became its principal player. For a few years folk music would vie with Motown and The Beatles for the top slots in the charts on both sides of the Atlantic.
This film is a perfect companion piece to the majestic tapestry of No Direction Home. That film told the story of how Dylan affected the world and the world affected Dylan. The Other Side of the Mirror brings you face to face with the work itself. Like the discovery of a hitherto unknown manuscript or an unseen masterpiece, this is a treasure trove, newly opened up.

SHUT UP AND SING
With Cecilia & Barbara

Phoenix 6pm €10
In 2003, during the run-up to the US-led invasion of Iraq, the Dixie Chicks unwittingly went from being the biggest-selling female act in music history to the most-heavily boycotted pariahs in the country music world. Barbara Kopple's Shut Up and Sing chronicles the three years following lead singer Natalie Maines's "infamous" anti-war statement, taking a holistic look at the three women as they negotiate their new status as political musicians and pour their experiences into the recording of their new album Taking the Long Way. The film captures much of the fallout between the Dixie Chicks and many country music fans when the band is back out on the road, culminating in a death threat against Natalie Maines.
Ultimately, the band finishes on top, with their record debuting at #1 on the Billboard Charts as well as picking up six awards at the 2006 Grammys. We also see the birth of Emily Robison's twins, and the warmth and love in all the Chicks' home lives. In Shut Up and Sing, Kopple's sensitive eye offers us the chance to see the Chicks as musicians, mothers, politicos, outcasts, and perhaps above all else, sisters. Shut Up and Sing was on the Oscars shortlist for Best Documentary in 2006 and also won the Special Jury Prize at the Chicago International Film Festival and the Audience Award at the Woodstock Film Festival.

THE STORY OF ANVIL
Phoenix Cinema 9pm €10At 14, Toronto school friends Steve "Lips" Kudlow and Robb Reiner made a pact to rock together forever. Their band, Anvil, went on to become the "demigods of Canadian metal," releasing one of the heaviest albums in metal history, 1982's Metal on Metal. The album influenced a musical generation, including Metallica, Slayer, and Anthrax, that went on to sell millions of records. But Anvil's career took a different path - straight to obscurity.
Picking up on their story 26 years later, director Sacha Gervasi has concocted an achingly touching and often hilarious account of Anvil's last-ditch quest for elusive fame and fortune. Not since ‘Metallica: Some Kind of Monster’ has such an incredibly raw, candid, hearbreaking and truly inspirational story been captured on film. At its core, Anvil! The True Story of Anvil is a timeless tale of survival and the unadulterated passion it takes to follow your dream, year after year. Anvil rocks - it has no other choice.
In the words of Rolling Stone: ‘Some of the scenes in Anvil are so outrageous, it feels like this must be a Spinal Tap sequel. It isn't. These guys are for real.’ Anvil! The Story of Anvil is an underdog saga even non-metalheads will root for. The first great rock movie of 2008!
